Egger Historical Trumpets are the most sought-after instruments in the period-instrument world. Egger trumpets are played in ensembles around the world including Apollo's Fire, Tafelmusik, Philharmonia Baroque, Clarino Consort, Washington Bach Consort, Folger Consort, Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Portland Baroque Orchestra, Musica Antiqua Köln, and others.

Adolf Egger founded the company "Blechblas-Instrumentenbau Egger" in 1940. He built brass instruments in all sizes, from the trumpet to the tuba and made a respected name for himself in the Basel, Switzerland area.

As an apprentice in his father's shop, Rainer Egger was fascinated to learn about the way instruments function. Constantly looking for the "ideal" sound and optimal acoustic properties, he further developed the historical instruments with which his father had pioneered.

Today Rainer Egger heads a small team of exceptionally skilled employees, who are devoted to maintain the highest standards of quality. The experience with which Egger's instruments are made is based on countless experiments with various materials, bores, and construction methods. The collaboration with expert musicians and acousticians and the use of an acoustical measuring device allow him to continuously refine his instruments. All the knowledge thus obtained is also poured into the construction of piccolo and rotary-valved trumpets as well as bocals for modern, classical and baroque bassoons.

4. Silver Baroque Bell

Baroque bell, Ehe or Haas in Sterling Silver. Big sound, rich of fundamentals, with good tonal penetration and projection.

5. Renaissance bell 0.3 mm (additional charge)
Renaissance decoration; intimate, dark sound; distinguished by remarkably good intonation in the lower register; appropriate not only for renaissance music, but also for the lowest part in a baroque trumpet ensemble.

“Historic”Bell option "Historic" (additional charge)
"Historic" bell No. 1, 3 or 5, ca. 0.35 mm, made from prehammered metal, with silver plated garland and ball, rich sound, soft bindings and tone initiation, easy trills, wide range of interpretation potentiality; not very loud playing; requires slightly more energy for holding a tone.

Crooking Systems for Short Model C/D Trumpet

Traditional Crooking System
Each crook has one tone hole and two octave holes, the octave holes in two positions, one for a'=440 Hz and a little bit higher, the other position for a slightly lower pitch. If the tuning slide (=leadpipe) is pulled out to full length, the correction holes on the crook have to be switched. In this case, the screws are simply switched to the next hole. When employing traditional crooks, a separate crook is used for each key. Mouthpipes: short mouthpipe for D 440 Hz, D 415 Hz and C 440 Hz; long mouthpipe for C 415 Hz.

Traditional crooks are available in
Bb 440, 430, & 415
C 440, 430, & 415
D 440, 430, & 415
Eb 440, 430, & 415
E 440, 430, & 415.
F 430 & 415

Egger Crooking System
Basic crook for D or C
Attachments for a'=440 Hz, a'=430 Hz and a'=415 Hz respectively
A single crook of this system requires a basic crook and the corresponding attachment. By adding the second basic crook or further attachments, additional pitches and tonalities can be made available. Only the attachments have to be replaced in order to change from a'=440 to a'=430 or a'=415 Hz.
Mouthpipes: short mouthpipe for a'= 440 Hz (D, C); long mouthpipe for a'= 415 Hz (modern D-flat, C-flat); The long or short mouthpipe can be used for a'=430 Hz, but in this case we recommend instead a mid-length mouthpipe .

Options for 3-Hole Baroque Trumpets
Our search for quality and authenticity of sound even for the vented trumpet has resulted in a wide range of equipment which can be used instead of the standard accessories.

"A"-quality: chased leadpipe receiver; easier response and brighter sound in the high register.
"H"-quality: tube soldered from prehammered sheet metal; richer sound in the high register; less fundamentals and as a result slightly less stability.
"T"-quality: seamless tubes, transformed in a slow process which results in a hard surface; easier response in the high register.

Egger has copied the inner dimensions of a 4-valved instrument from 1878 by Václav Frantisek Cerveny in F/E-flat, that is today located in the Trumpet Museum, Bad Säckingen. The form is representative of the normal Cerveny trumpets in F. Additional tunings in E-flat and D are also made possible through the use of extra tuning slides. F-alto trumpets were in use during the 19th century, after the invention of the valves (ca. 1815). Composers such as, Schumann, Schubert, Wagner, Verdi, Dvorak, Berlioz, César Franck, Bruckner, R. Strauss, Mahler (R. Strauss und Mahler mostly for 2nd and 3rd parts) wrote works for this instrument.

The Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich recently recorded the symphonies of Schumann (Ex Libris, spring 2004). The first and second were played on Egger natural trumpets, while the third and fourth on the alto trumpets. Additionally, natural horns from our workshop were also used.

Design
The valve slides have been made with Heckel geometry. Bell and tubing have been hammered and soldered. All other tubing is made seemless.
