The Baroque Trumpet Mouthpiece
The Baroque trumpet mouthpiece differs from the modern mouthpiece in several important ways. The cup is more hemispherical or bowl shaped, the shoulder of the cup leading into the backbore has a very sharp angle, the backbore is often stepped, and the rim is generally flat, not rounded. While mouthpieces in the Baroque era, like today, were produced in many sizes and configurations, the above characteristics were common. Mouthpieces were usally larger than todays standard mouthpiece. The general characteristics are shown in Andrew Naumann's illustration below.

Many players prefer rounded, modern rims, and both Egger and Naumann offer these mouthpieces as well as the more "authentic" flat rimmed models.

Naumann Baroque Trumpet Mouthpieces
Silver Plate - $90.00
Gold Plate - $120.00

5bNaumann Baroque trumpet mouthpieces come in 7 sizes. The Principale is a large cup, mainly used for low register playing. The Standard size is similar to the popular Salzburg #6 mouthpiece many manufactures make. It is a medium cup that works well for all around playing. The Clarino size is the smallest and is an excellent choice for extreme upper register playing. All the mouthpieces have a characteristic bowl shaped cup with a sharp inner shoulder (to the throat).

Egger Historical Mouthpieces

In collaboration with Friedemann Immer and Jean-Françoise Madeuf, Egger has been able to produce a new mouthpiece model every few weeks. This concerns above all, an increase to the Bull series and a completely new series of SI (Salzburg/Immer) mouthpieces that while similar to the Salzburg models, produce a lighter, brilliant sound and more flexibility in intonation.

OPT Mouthpieces
Rainer Egger has optimized the SI Series of mouthpieces to facilitate playing in the high register and with trumpets without holes. The OPT Series is available in B9, SI5, SI6, and SI7 sizes.

Bauguess Model B9 and B9OPT Mouthpieces
Rainer Egger is producing copies of Barry Bauguess' personal mouthpieces in both the SI and SIOPT configurations. Slightly smaller than the SI7 Series, the B9 and B9OPT are the personal choice of Barry Bauguess.
