The Natural Trumpet by John Foster
The Natural Trumpet and other related instruments - John Foster
Newly published 2nd edition. Revised and expanded with more pages, more photographs, more musical exercises and more orchestral excerpts.
John Foster's new book on the natural trumpet is a valuable addition to the trumpet literature and I recommend it to all most highly. It begins with a section on the history of the instrument with which all students should familiarize themselves. Following this is a chapter on the development of the different types of instrument and the important makers during its holden period of the 17th and 18th Centuries.
This book will provide all the information necessary for a modern trumpeter to make a start on period instrument performance with either an authentic natural trumpet or on the Baroque trumpet with vent holes. Slide trumpets and keyed trumpets are also discussed with plenty of references for the enthusiastic student to follow up.
I wish that I had this book when I was a young man and was starting my natural trumpet playing in the 1960s. It would have clarified any number of performance issues as well as pointing me in the right direction for further research.
Congratulations on your good work, John, and thank you for reminding me that "music is meant to be fun".
